Igniting Community Women to Solve Their Problems on Their Own
In every Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) monthly meeting, we receive guidance to promote certain activities and awareness in the community. Formation and strengthening of Mahila Arogya Samitis was one such priority area for me. Initially, it appeared challenging. But the coaching and mentoring support I received from my Medical Officer In-charge (MOIC) and PSI India helped me achieve this."
Malti was once assigned by the UPHC Chattauni MOIC to identify slum areas where she had previously worked. Although she was familiar with the community, the residents were initially reluctant to talk about their health concerns. With patience and consistent interaction, she slowly built trust, discussing family planning methods, government health schemes, outreach camps, and UHSND activities.
During her visits, she identified women interested in learning more and encouraged them to form a MAS groups. Many women hesitated due to a lack of confidence, but Malti’s encouragement gradually motivated them to step forward. With her persistence, MAS in Chattauni was formed, creating a strong platform for community engagement.
Malti explains, “Activating the MAS in the Chattauni area has not only empowered the women, but it has empowered me too. Today, women reach out to me on their own, whether they want to join the MAS group or need support with any health service, especially family planning. Knowing that they trust me and see me as their guide fills me with immense hope and pride.”
Through Malti’s efforts and with PSI India’s support the women of Chattauni are now taking charge of their health, proving that empowered communities can solve their own problems.
PSI India, under Strengthening Family Planning Intervention Across Bihar project supports ASHAs and health systems in strengthening MAS groups. Through technical assistance and capacity building, PSI India focus on empowering women-led groups to improve community accountability and build a resilient health system.
