Diarrhoea Se Darr Nahi: Empowering Mothers, Saving Lives

One morning, Suman rushed into the ESI Town Hall health center in Moradabad, holding her crying, weakened baby. The child had been passing frequent loose stools, and panic had taken over.

Dr. Raj Dulari examined the baby gently and asked, “Did you give ORS solution?” Suman shook her head, embarrassed. “I have heard of ORS, but I didn’t know it actually works.”

With calm assurance, Dr. Dulari explained, “If a child passes loose stools more than three times a day, it’s diarrhoea. The first and most important treatment is ORS, it prevents dehydration and protects the child.” Relief slowly replaced Suman’s fear as she realized she had been unaware of the simplest remedy.

She admitted softly, “Neither my husband nor my in-laws told me ORS could make my baby safe.” Dr. Dulari handed her ORS and Zinc tablets and guided her on breastfeeding and hygiene. She emphasized how Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) not only provide these supplies but also educate families on correct dosage and usage.

Suman left the health center not just with medicines, but with confidence and clarity, knowing that a small packet of ORS could safeguard her child’s life.

Her story mirrors that of countless mothers across PSI India’s intervention districts, who are learning that ‘diarrhoea se darr nahi’, especially when armed with knowledge, support, and timely care.
